After 35 odd matches into the IPL and more 20 to go, we can all agree that the point table is getting more clear after each match. We get an idea of who is more likely to qualify and who is not, or who are the teams who can make a comeback and qualify.
Judging from the current points table 2 team are most likely to qualify without any hustle. They are the Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad the current top 2 teams. The 3rd spot will most likely be taken by the Kings XI Punjab who has a balanced side. With CSK, KXIP and SRH solidifying their position in the top 3, this leaves the 4th spot for qualifiers. Today we look at the teams who are in the race for the 4th position.
Kolkata Knight Riders
They are the favorites among the rest of the race due to the 4 point advantage over other teams. The reason they haven’t yet solidified their position in top 4 is that they have 2 matches against the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians are known to comeback late in the tournament, add a 16-5 win record in favor of the Mumbai Indians. The last time KKR beat MI was in 2015 after which MI have a 5 match winning streak against them. If they survive this test against the MI then no one can stop them from qualifying for playoffs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore / Rajasthan Royals
After KKR the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals are in a better position than MI, DD as they have 1 match more to play. If they win their next match it will give them a good mental advantage. RR had a close game against DD last time while RCB has started to gain momentum after they defeated MI by 14 runs.
Mumbai Indians / Delhi Daredevils
Things have started to work for the MI Paltan as they beat KXIP in their last game while they need to win all their remaining matches to qualify. While DD has come alive after the captaincy change, the team is starting to look different as Iyer and Pant are firing along with Vijay Shankar who has started chipping in as well, they have the purple cap holder in their bowling lineup, it’s a good time to start winning for the Daredevils. While both the teams have won 3 out of 9 matches, they may have a chance to qualify as MI has done it before in 2014.
Although we are analyzing the points table, we all know from the past that the points table is still open, as it can change anytime. For example, just in case the comfortable looking KXIP lose their next 2 matches, their chance of qualifying for playoffs changes drastically. So at the current situation, we should count no one out.
